This artwork shows Meike, Erna’s daughter, as a child, surrounded by animals. It is rooted in a statement she made at the age of seven: “I don’t eat anything that has eyes.” A simple thought that stayed.
In the image, Meike appears with a dodo resting on her head—a species lost through human impact, present here as a reminder of what disappears and what asks for care.
The composition unfolds like a “carpet of love”: a shared ground where humans and animals exist together. The words “Hi it’s us”, woven into the decorative flowers, point to this idea—there is no real separation, only one living world.
The work continues to live on in a personal way: it now hangs in the room of Meike’s son, where it sparks conversations about the animals in the image.
A layered piece about connection, awareness, and seeing life as a whole.
mulberry paper
Mulberry paper is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The bark can be harvested without cutting the tree down, as it grows back over time, which makes it a sustainable material.
I love to work with this paper because it has a natural, soft feel and a slightly irregular texture. to me it looks a bit like silk — a comparison that makes sense when you think about how silkworms feed on the leaves of the mulberry tree.
For me, it’s a simple, honest material that fits well with the way I work.
