Inspired by the earliest known Dutch words—“Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hic enda thu” (“All birds have begun their nests, except me and you—what are we waiting for now?”)—this work reflects the deep connection between humans and the natural world.
A poetic reflection by writer Christie Collins (USA) offers an additional lens on the work:
“Home. You wanted to home with me, in my skin with me, in a nest of twigs & pine with me. To winter and spring with me.”
mulberry paper
Mulberry paper is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The bark can be harvested without cutting the tree down, as it grows back over time, which makes it a sustainable material.
I love to work with this paper because it has a natural, soft feel and a slightly irregular texture. to me it looks a bit like silk — a comparison that makes sense when you think about how silkworms feed on the leaves of the mulberry tree.
For me, it’s a simple, honest material that fits well with the way I work.
